This ongoing series of illustrated assets explores the the design of medieval reliquaries. Although seemingly bizarre today, relics were powerful tools of the church. As compelling evidence of faith, reliquaries containing pieces of saints’ bodies or belongings were designed as heavenly works to match the spiritual power of their contents. While these illustrations are of my own design, they strive to capture the essence of the glorious grotesque nonetheless.
